Key trends in passenger car registrations in 2020

In 2020, four out of five registered cars were used. More than a third of the purchased cars were over 10 years old.

The Federation of the Automotive Industry of Ukraine has prepared a review of key trends in car registrations for 2020 based on data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

So what cars did Ukrainians choose last year?

The used car market exceeds the new car market by a large margin. For comparison, 86.2 thousand new cars were registered during the year. The market of used cars exceeded this figure 4 times and amounted to 367.1 thousand units.

At the same time, 2020 continued the aging trend of the domestic car fleet. Сars aged 10 and older were the most popular - the share of such cars accounted for 35% of all registrations. Cars under 3 years old form only 23% of the market.

57% of all cars registered in Ukraine ran on gasoline, 31% of Ukrainians preferred diesel cars. Registrations of electric cars took 2% of the market last year.

As for the leaders in the used car market, the first place in the number of registrations is occupied by Volkswagen (17% of the market). Volkswagen used cars were bought 16 times more than new ones. In general, used Volkswagen Group cars are very popular among Ukrainians - in the TOP-10 models 5 models of this concern took places.

Ford ranks second with a market share of 9%. The number of registrations was 14 times higher than the sales of new cars of the brand. And in third place Renault was (market share 9%); the number of registrations was 2 times higher than the sales of new cars of the brand.

* The number of initial registrations and registrations of cars purchased from a trade organization or brought from abroad on the basis of a customs certificate or customs clearance was counted as registrations. Re-registration and temporary registrations were not included in the statistics.
